LED Masks for Dark Spots and Hyperpigmentation: The Truth

Where LED helps pigmentation, and where it does not.

January 14, 2025 · The Radia Atelier

Not all dark spots are the same. LED therapy helps some types and is contraindicated for others. Diagnosing the type is step one.

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation

Brown marks left behind by acne or eczema. LED red and near-infrared reduce the inflammation that drives PIH and speed clearance. Good fit.

Sun spots and freckles

LED is not a depigmentation tool. Use targeted ingredients (tranexamic acid, kojic acid, azelaic acid) or in-clinic IPL.

Melasma — caution

High-intensity visible light can worsen melasma. If you have melasma, stick to red and near-infrared masks (no yellow or blue light) and consult a dermatologist.

Frequently asked

Will LED lighten my dark spots over time?
For post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, yes, indirectly, by accelerating skin turnover and reducing background inflammation. For sun spots and freckles, no.
