The Complete LED Face Mask Buying Guide for 2025

A checklist that filters out 80% of the market.

January 14, 2025 · The Radia Atelier

Most LED mask buying guides are sponsored. This one is not. Here are the eight criteria that separate a real medical-grade device from a glorified novelty.

The eight criteria

  • FDA Class II clearance — not "registered," cleared.
  • Disclosed wavelengths in nanometres — 633 nm red and 830 nm near-infrared at minimum.
  • Disclosed irradiance — milliwatts per square centimetre, ideally measured at skin distance.
  • Flexible form factor that maintains skin contact.
  • Hands-free operation — strap or contour fit.
  • Built-in eye protection.
  • Rechargeable battery, not a wired controller.
  • Warranty of at least 18 months.

Claims to ignore

  • "Salon-quality" — not a regulated term.
  • "7 colours of light" — most extras are cosmetic, not therapeutic.
  • "Boosted by NASA technology" — marketing, not a spec.
  • "Used by celebrities" — celebrities use everything that ships them a free unit.

Frequently asked

What is the minimum I should spend?
For a medical-grade FDA-cleared mask with the right wavelengths and dose, expect to spend in the low-to-mid hundreds. Anything below that range usually means cut corners.
Are 7-colour masks worth it?
For most people, no. Red and near-infrared do the heavy lifting. Extra colours are largely cosmetic differentiators.
