LED Therapy for Under-Eye Bags and Dark Circles
Diagnose the circle before you treat it.
February 13, 2025 · The Radia Atelier
Dark circles are four different problems wearing the same costume. LED therapy helps two of them meaningfully, one of them slightly, and one of them not at all. Working out which you have saves months of misdirected effort.
The four types
| Type | How to identify it | LED response |
|---|---|---|
| Vascular | Blue or purple tone; worse when tired | Good — improves microcirculation and dermal thickness |
| Structural | Shadow from a hollow or eye-bag; changes with lighting angle | Limited — this is anatomy, not pigment |
| Pigmented | Brown tone; even in good light; often hereditary | Slight — LED is not a depigmenting treatment |
| Crepey / thin skin | Fine crinkling, translucency | Good — collagen induction thickens the dermis |
A simple test: stretch the skin gently at the outer corner. If the darkness lightens, it is largely vascular or textural and LED is worth your time. If it stays put, it is pigment. If it only appears in overhead light, it is a shadow cast by structure.
Why the under-eye needs its own protocol
Periorbital skin is roughly 0.5 mm thick, against 2 mm elsewhere on the face. It has fewer sebaceous glands, less collagen and a denser capillary network. That makes it more responsive to collagen induction — and less tolerant of overtreatment.
The protocol
- Use your standard full-face session — do not add extra targeted sessions for the eye area.
- Three to four sessions weekly at ten minutes is sufficient.
- Eyes fully closed, with the mask's integrated eye protection in place. Never treat with eyes open.
- Afterwards, apply a peptide eye product while skin is receptive. Skip retinoid eye creams on session nights if you are prone to irritation.
- Reassess at eight weeks with photographs taken in the same light.
What actually fixes the other causes
- Structural hollowing: filler or fat repositioning, assessed by a clinician.
- True eye bags from fat herniation: surgical, not topical or device-based.
- Pigmented circles: tranexamic acid, azelaic acid, disciplined daily SPF, or clinician-guided treatment.
- Fluid puffiness: sleep position, sodium, allergy management and morning cooling.
Realistic expectation
For vascular and crepey under-eyes, expect gradual improvement in skin quality and a less shadowed appearance across eight to twelve weeks. Nobody should expect a hollow to fill or hereditary pigment to disappear. Being clear about that is the difference between a satisfied result and an abandoned device.

- Does red light therapy help dark circles?
- It helps vascular and thin-skinned dark circles by improving microcirculation and stimulating collagen, which thickens the dermis. It does very little for hereditary pigmentation or shadows cast by facial structure.
- Is it safe to use an LED mask around the eyes?
- Yes, with eyes closed and proper eye protection in place. Never run a session with eyes open, and do not add extra targeted sessions for the eye area.
- Can LED therapy remove eye bags?
- No. True eye bags caused by herniated fat are a structural issue that only surgery addresses. LED can improve the quality and thickness of the overlying skin.
- How long until under-eye improvement shows?
- Around eight to twelve weeks of consistent use, because the change comes from newly synthesised collagen rather than surface hydration.
