LED Therapy for Men: A Practical Guide to At-Home Light Care

Light therapy without the marketing fluff.

January 22, 2025 · The Radia Atelier

Male skin is roughly 25% thicker than female skin and produces more sebum. The result: men benefit from LED therapy in slightly different ways. Here is the practical guide.

Why LED suits male skin

  • Thicker dermis means 830 nm near-infrared has more tissue to work on — collagen gains tend to register more visibly.
  • Razor irritation responds well to red light's anti-inflammatory effect.
  • Higher baseline sebum production means LED works alongside, not against, oily skin.

A simple weekly protocol

  • 4 sessions per week, 10 minutes each, evening preferred.
  • Cleanse first. Skip serums until after the session.
  • Shave on non-LED nights, or LED the morning after shaving to calm irritation.
  • Pair with a lightweight moisturiser and daily SPF.

What it will and will not fix

  • Will: soften forehead lines, reduce post-shave redness, even out tone.
  • Will not: regrow hair, lighten beard shadow, replace dermatologist care for cystic acne.

Frequently asked

Can I use LED with a full beard?
Yes. The mask still treats the upper face — forehead, eyes, cheeks. Coverage under thick beard hair is reduced, which is fine.
Will LED help with razor bumps?
Indirectly, yes. Red light's anti-inflammatory effect helps reduce the inflammation that worsens ingrown hairs.
